Upgrading to macOS Sonoma

Keeping your Mac’s operating system up to date is one of the easiest ways to keep it secure and protect it from malware or worse. It also means you have the latest features and technologies from Apple, which is a good thing as well!

Upgrading is a relatively simple process and there’s no reason to stress! We’ve put together this guide to help make it as easy as possible.

Step 1 - Are Your Files Safe?

While the chances of something going wrong are low, there’s still a chance so it’s best to prepare accordingly. We’ve put together some information on the different ways you can back up your files so take a look and let us know if you have any questions (helpdesk@su.edu or your local IT support person).

Step 2 - Let’s Upgrade!

The upgrade is going to take some time, likely 30-60 minutes, so plan accordingly as you won’t be able to use your computer while the upgrade in installing. Make sure you have your power adapter connected before you begin! Having the computer run out of battery and shut down during the upgrade is a way to have a bad day.

The upgrade is available in System Preferences  > Software Update, or System Settings > General > Software Update.

Step 3 - Take a Look at What’s New

While your computer is upgrading, you might as well spend a few minutes checking out what’s new in Sonoma. One of the biggest changes is that System Preferences is now System Settings and looks more like the Settings app you see on the iPad and iPhone. Here are some Apple pages with more details:

Step 4 - Check for App Updates

It’s not uncommon for there to be updates for apps after you upgrade macOS. Check for updates for your browsers, Microsoft Office, and any other third-party apps you use.
