Shenandoah University’s sign-in service provider (Microsoft) is ending support for text messages and phone calls as verification methods. As a result, on February 1, 2027, these methods will no longer work for your SUNet login. Your SUNet login is used to sign in to Hornet Hub, Canvas, SU email and other services.
To prepare for this change, you must set up Microsoft Authenticator on a smartphone or tablet you currently use. This will ensure you have a more secure, supported way to verify your identity during the transition and help avoid temporary access interruptions.
What you need to do
Begin by verifying you have an active Microsoft Authenticator sign-in method added to your account.
Here’s how to check:
- Visit mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info.
- Review the list of sign-in methods.
- If you see any Microsoft Authenticator methods that reference devices you no longer have, delete them.
- If you have a Microsoft Authenticator method set up on a device you currently possess and can access, you are ready for the transition, but please see below for adding a second device to your account.
If you do not have an active Microsoft Authenticator method, you can add one while you’re in the Security Info settings:
- Install Microsoft Authenticator from your device’s app store (if you don’t already have it).
- Return to the Security Info settings and select “+Add sign-in method.”
- Select Microsoft Authenticator and follow the instructions.
We also recommend installing Microsoft Authenticator on a second device, such as an iPad, if possible. This will help maintain uninterrupted access to your account if your primary device is replaced in the future.
What you may see

Beginning on or around September 23, 2026, if you do not have an active Microsoft Authenticator sign-in method for your account, you will see an “Improve your sign-ins” prompt while signing in with your SUNet account. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process. If you select “Skip for now,” you will be prompted again on a later login attempt and eventually required to complete the setup.
